Oberufer Paradise Play seeks Eve
At many Waldorf Schools around the world, the Oberufer Shepherds Play is performed at this time of year, usually by the teachers for the students. Often, the Oberufer Paradise Play is included, for 3rd Graders and up. Sometimes the Oberufer Three Kings Play is also presented, for 5th Graders and up. Alumni have said that these plays gave them their richest experience of the holidays.
Here in Santa Cruz, for several years the Shepherds Play has been put on by the Anthroposophical Branch, with a cast drawn from Waldorf teachers, parents , friends and Camphill. This year, we shall be including the Paradise Play in a performance on Saturday, December 23rd at Louden Nelson Theater (along with the Shepherd's Play). We have not yet found our Eve. Rehearsals will be at Camphill, Paloma Hall, Sundays from 12:30 to 3pm. If you are interested in taking the part, or know of someone who might be, please call Christopher Splendorio at (831) 332-9814 !
Rudolf Steiner once said that one could see the ultimate aim of education as teaching children to breathe. The Oberufer Plays give us an enlivening experience of breathing in the alternation between the boisterous singing of the whole Company and peacefully focused scenes of individual interaction.
In the darkest, coldest time of the year, we trust that you, our audience, will be given the refreshment and serenity that we, the Company, certainly do experience from the life and love expressed in these plays.
